"The origin of art : the discrepancy between physical fact and psychic effect. The content of art : Visual formulation of our reaction to life. The measure of art : the ratio of effort to effect. The aim of art : revelation and evocation of vision. J.A."--P.[3].
"It has taken nearly two years...to produce the 127 new prints for this double portfolio...I am most grateful to...Norman Ives and Sewell Sillman, for their...assistance in solving the multiple challenges in design and color. My praise must go to the Sirocco Screenprinters for...printing these portfolios. J.A."--Acknowledgements (p.[4]).
Summary "The concept of this publication is the realization rather than the reproduction of the essential ideas in Josef Albers' works...Works have been selected from forty years of Albers' search and offer an unusual opportunity for study of this significant artist's direct participation in an original development of his own work...Finally, in Josef Albers' own words: "Our aim is not a retrospective report; the book aims at art itself, meaning: no retrospective in the usual sense. These are visual realizations here presented outspoken in silkscreen""--Preface (p.[4]).
